Articles An article is a small word that is associated with a noun. There are three articles: the, a, an. Articles can be definite or indefinite. An article points to the nounnear or next to it.
The baby. (article, noun) The cute baby. (article, adjective, noun)
A baby. (article, noun) An adorable baby. (article, adjective, noun)
Definite Articles
There is one definite article: “the.” It indicates the specific noun, not a general noun. “The” baby is not just any baby or one of a dozen babies, it is ‘the specific baby’ that is indicated.
Indefinite Articles
There are two indefinite articles: “a” and “an.” They indicate that the noun near or next to them is a general noun.
“A” baby refers to any baby, not just one baby in particular. “A” is used when the noun begins with a consonant. A baby. A dog. A blog.
“An” is another form of “A” that is used when the noun or adjective that follows begins with a vowel. An adorable baby. An instrument. An alien entity.
